'I can play 15 instruments but still can't get a job'

ANGELINE Jenner is one of the most musically-gifted jobseekers in the Toowoomba region.

The 20-year-old spent the majority of her teenage years picking up instruments and quickly mastering them.

But after two years in the Garden City, she says she still can't find a job, despite her expertise with 15 different musical instruments.

"People don't realise how much having that negativity and rejection around you affects you personally," she said.

USQ's Dr Peter McIlveen has worked in the business sector and done extensive research in the field of career development.

In his opinion, the Toowoomba region has an issue when it comes to out of work youngsters.

"What we need to focus on (in Toowoomba) is youth unemployment," Dr McIlveen said.

"It (unemployment) is higher here for young people and that reflects a national trend."

For someone in their 20s, Ms Jenner believes being classed as a junior when it comes to payment rates holds people back.

But she believes she has faced other barriers to finding employment during her time in Toowoomba.

"Often I'm told they're looking for a 16-year-old junior not a 20-year-old junior," she said.

"I don't have that many qualifications as a young person and that is a huge setback.

"But are you going to go out there and only get qualified for a job you might not get?"
