Illicit drug cooks rob chemist shops

QUEENSLAND police believe a series of Gold Coast pharmacy robberies is linked to an illegal amphetamines operation.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Jim Keogh says four chemists have been robbed in similar fashion this week and they were most likely linked.

In all four cases, pseudoephedrine cold and flu tablets were either stolen or an attempt was made, Supt Keogh said.

“There is obviously a current demand for pseudoephedrine component of cold and flu tablets,” Supt Keogh said.

“We do believe this is linked to the production of amphetamine-based drugs.”

Thieves smashed their way into Chempro at Supply Court in Arundel about 1am yesterday.

Three hours later, a chemist at Ashmore Plaza was targeted.

This follows break-ins at two other chemist shops at Burleigh Waters and Robina earlier this week. Police investigations are continuing.
