IN DEEP: Teach kids snorkelling skills first

I'VE always held the view that as a general rule, the minimum age to obtain a scuba-diving certificate should be 14.

Dive training agencies around the world have set the minimum age at 10.

There have always been concerns about children and diving.

Many young children do not have the sufficient body size and strength to come to the aid of their diving buddy in an underwater emergency.

Diving doctors report children are predisposed to ear infections.

Many experts also agree that children often lack the mental maturity to understand risks associated with being underwater.

There is no doubt that many youngsters possess good water skills.

My advice to parents of young children is to encourage them to first take up snorkelling.

It is a wonderful activity for the whole family.

The next natural progression after snorkelling can be scuba diving.

This can start when they reach the age of 14.
