Memorial for Centaur hospital ship sunk during the war

CENTAUR Primary School will honour its namesake, the sunken hospital ship AHS Centaur, with a memorial service on Monday.

Students who have consistently displayed courage and endeavour in the school community will also be presented with the Hindmarsh medal by Jan Thomas.

Mrs Thomas' father Dr Bernie Hindmarsh lost his life when the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine on Friday, May 14, 1943 some 71 years ago.

Other family members and descendants of those who lost their lives will also be on hand.

Warren Keats will lay a wreath on behalf of the Centaur Commemoration Committee in memory, while Brian Hunt, president of the Merchant Naval Association, will speak on the role of the AHS Centaur and the Merchant Navy.

The service will be held at the Point Danger memorial from 10am.
