Indian classical night popular

IT was a full house in the Murwillumbah Civic Centre on Thursday night for the Gait to the Spirit Indian classical dance and music performance.

Extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the 400 people who wanted to see the show which included routines from internationally recognised acts.

Show co-ordinator Mohini Cox said there is already talk of a follow-up performance.

“It was such a great success on Thursday, we are thinking about a ballet next time to showcase all classical Indian styles of dance,” Ms Cox said.

Classical styles of Odissi and Bharata Natym were performed on the night.

Thursday’s show featured exhibitions from Canada’s leading bharatanatyam male dancer Jai Govinda, Odissi India Classical Dance practitioner Scheherazaad Cooper from the UK, a performance by Aruna Pavritran and vocal by Hari Bhakti Dey, both of India, and Murwillumbah’s Natyashakti Dance Company.
