Woman swept out to sea at Fingal in critical condition
Update, 4.55pm: THE woman rescued by a police officer in the ocean at Fingal Head has sustained serious injuries and is in a critical condition.
An Ambulance Service of NSW spokeswoman said paramedics were called at 2.45pm to Marine Pde in Fingal Head by police from Tweed Byron LAC.
"The police carried the woman from the water and we were awaiting them at the shore," she said.
"She was suffering a traumatic knee injury and was in a pretty bad way. She was in critical condition."
The spokeswoman said the injured woman was approximately 25-years-old and had symptoms of hypothermia and a knee fracture.
She was airlifted by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter to Gold Coast Hospital.
No more information is available at this time.
Update, 3.47pm: IT appears the woman rescued by a police officer had fallen into the ocean before being dragged out to sea.
Fresh wounds, varying from deep cuts to scratches, could be seen on the women's head, legs and arms.
More details as they become available.
Update, 3.20pm: IT is understood a police officer has swum out to rescue the woman, returning her to shore.
It is not known if she has sustained injuries at this stage.
Initial Report, 3.07pm: A WOMAN has been swept about half a kilometre out to sea at Fingal Head, near Marine Pde.
The fully clothed woman was dragged about 400-500m out on strong currents and is now located near Cook Island.
It appears the woman is not panicking and is floating on her back.
Marine Rescue NSW and Ambulance Service of NSW paramedics have been called by Tweed Police and jetskis are heading from Kingscliff to assist the woman.
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is on its way to the scene with a full medical team on board.
