Ipswich MP condemned for "Stalinist" retort

BUNDAMBA MP Jo-Ann Miller has weighed into the bikie debate, slamming Ipswich MP Sean Choat over his reponse to being labelled "a Stalinist".

Mr Choat said in yesterday's QT that he was happy to be called a Stalinist by his detractors if it meant that outlaw motorcycle gangs were eradicated.

He backed the Newman government's new legislation that can see bikies who commit offences in jail in solitary confinement for an extra 25 years compared to other citizens.

Mrs Miller took Mr Choat to task for his comments and for his attitude towards "the separation of powers".

"Sean Choat has captured the philosophy of this government in one fell swoop - a government that believes it can dictate how the court sentences criminals, a government that has little concept of how the legal system works," Mrs Miller said.

"This MP...has no clue about the separation of powers and the need for an independent judicial system.

"Ordinary, decent people - people with a conscience - are right to be offended that Mr Choat wants to be seen as a Stalinist and they should be horrified that he describes the separation of powers between government and the judiciary as 'claptrap'. Mr Choat...may have forgotten or never known the lessons from the Fitzgerald Inquiry that found Liberal and National party governments had presided over rampant corruption."
