It’s a jungle out there, and it helps dads and sons bond

TRYING to communicate with a teenager can be like learning a foreign language.

So what better way to break through the communication barrier than adding the dynamic of a different country, a different language and a different culture?

Rick Petersen was desperate to ensure the relationship between his sons, Arnhem and Tasman, was not the same as the broken one he had with his dad.

The former SAS officer has joined with Sue Parish's Experience Sumatra tours to offer father and son getaways in the heart of the jungle.

"As a father of two teenage sons, I treasure the time spent with them. The honest and open relationships allow for a bond and trust that grows stronger every day and that is priceless," Mr Petersen said.

"I also know it is not always a smooth road and that the role of a father and husband in our current climate is confusing and complex, as is the role of our sons.''

Mr Petersen believes boys need to have the opportunity to be "tested physically, mentally and spiritually".

Travelling to Sumatra allows the fathers and sons to share unique experiences, like riding an elephant and trekking to the summit of a volcano.

"We have a great program with one of the local villages which includes a visit to their school to lend a hand and see the profound difference it makes to the village as a whole,'' Mr Petersen said.

Traditional Sumatran jungle medicine and survival, campfire conversations, white water rafting and camping alone form part of the week-long experience.
