Jacon Sullivan wins Tweed U-16

JUNIORS from as far south as Sydney and north from Brisbane converged on Tweed Heads Tennis Club courts at Arkinstall Park, Tweed Heads South last week for the Tweed District Junior Open Age Championships.

While numbers were down on previous years, the standard of tennis remained very high over the course of the long weekend.

The tournament catered for girls and boys in age groups from 10-and-under through to the under-16s.

In the “blue ribbon” event, the under-16 boys' singles, Grafton's Jacon Sullivan defeated Ipswich's Harry Bell for the title of Tweed champion.

The under-14 boys singles went to Liam Davenport from Grafton over Callum West from Kempsey. Davenport beat Tweed's Joseph Gersbach ( pictured left) in the semi after Gersbach caused a big upset to oust number-one seed Akira Santillan in the quarter-finals.

In the under-12 boys, Cole Ingram from Runaway Bay beat fellow Bay player Josh Ryan.

In the under-12 boys doubles, Terranora's Caleb Maxted and Aaron Westerlund downed Pottsville's Sam Cartwright and Southport Sam Heddes for the title.

In the girls' singles, the under-16s title was won by Mollie Houlahan from Grafton over her twin sister Rachel.

The under-14 title went to Jackie Bell from Ipswich who downed Emily McColl from Port Macquarie, and in the under 12s, Vanessa Anderson from Sydney beat Pottsville's Amber Malloy.

The Houlahan twins also won the girls' under-16 doubles, while Ashley Elward and Emily McColl won the girls' under-14 doubles.
