Jameson wins surfing tournament
CABARITA surfboard shaper, Jason Jameson, made the most of choppy conditions to beat a hot field of surfers in the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic at Burleigh Heads yesterday.
The 20-year-old Cabarita surfboard shaper defied a hot field and the presence of a huge swarm of bluebottles to win the prestigious tournament on count back from Burleigh Heads' Noah Lane, while third place in the six men final went to Lane's club mate, Kyle Robinson.
Burleigh's Ryan Grey finished fourth, defending champion, Clint Kimmins (Snapper Rocks) was fifth and Cabarita's Brent Savage wound up in sixth place.
Jameson won not only the glory and spectacular trophy but two return airfare tickets to Bali courtesy of Air Asia.
Jameson, as they say in surfing circles, "was stoked" by the victory over a hot field of young and veteran surfers.
"I'm over the moon," Jameson said at the presentation of trophies.
"To come here and beat a field of this size and class is mind blowing."
The final was contested in choppy conditions in half to one metre waves dotted by bluebottles which converged in their thousands onto Burleigh Heads.
The bluebottles failed to take the sting out of some terrific performances in the final in which the board riders were judged on their best two rides.
Jameson and Lane, who was runner-up behind Kimmins last year, were locked on points after their finals performances but Jameson was awarded the trophy and the honours on count back due to a sensational 9.0 ride in the semi-finals.
Sixty four surfers contested the tournament - young and old came out to play in the Burleigh surf with ages ranging from 11 years through to 50 years.
Jameson, who was taught to shape surfboards by his father Mark when he was only 10, followed his dad into the game on leaving school.
He now operates his own business - Jason Jameson Surfboards - and there's little doubt yesterday's win will be a tremendous boost to his business.
