ROCKHAMPTON'S Jemma Ricks never thought she'd be on the cover of an Australian swimsuit magazine.

But that's exactly what happened after the local model won a photography competition last year.

Jemma made the cover of Australian Swimsuit's September edition after her friend entered her in an online competition.

Jemma, 24, started modelling when she was 18 but had stopped to focus on her career as a wedding planner.

"Last year there was a competition going on online for a model to win a shoot with the photographer from Nitro Images," she said.

"My friend, who had won the previous competition, put me in the running and kept sharing my photo online for people to vote. I knew she had entered me but I didn't really think anything of it because I didn't expect to win it.

"I wasn't even checking the votes but my friend would always tell me I was in the lead. I won the photoshoot and the photographer loved the photos so much he sent them to Australian Swimsuit Edition and they really like them too."

The September cover girl said seeing herself on the front cover of an international magazine was still something she was getting used to.

"It is so weird to see a magazine with my face and body on it," she said. "I didn't think it would be on the cover. I moved to the Gold Coast early last year and put modelling on hold so I'd been out of the scene for a while but Australian Swimsuit really wanted me to be on the cover and I still can't believe that."

Jemma is moving back to Rockhampton this month to pursue her wedding planner career.
