Sydney set to light up the skies for New Year's Eve

WITH a global audience of one billion people, Sydney Harbour's iconic fireworks display has a lot to live up to and by Tuesday night organisers were putting the finishing touches to what Lord Mayor Clover Moore promised would be the biggest and best show ever.

Tipped to cost about $6 million, the New Year's Eve spectacular took months of preparation and featured more than seven tonnes of fireworks including a rare display from the sails of Sydney's Opera House.

In the city's west, thousands of revellers had their New Year's Eve plans ruined when promoters of a music festival at the recently opened Wet'n'Wild Sydney water park cancelled the event on Tuesday morning because of "production issues".

But at Sydney Harbour, plans were running smoothly, the skies were clear and more than one million people - some of whom had camped out overnight - were gathering at popular vantage spots.

Organisers were keeping this year's Harbour Bridge display a secret but it was hoped the grand finale would rival the 2000 Eternity spectacular.

Inspired by the theme Shine, the display will feature work from this year's ambassador - artist and founder of rock band Mental as Anything Reg Mombassa.

Crowd numbers were expected to reach 1.6 million by 9pm in time for the family fireworks which are followed by the main event at midnight.
