Job seekers on the hunt
A TWEED employment agency has set itself a tough goal: placing 1000 unemployed people in work within the next 100 days.
NORTEC Staffing Solutions, which is headquartered in Tweed Heads but services the NSW mid-north coast through to south-east Queensland, launched its latest job campaign on Monday.
Now in its seventh year, the campaign aims to place 1000 unemployed people in a job within 100 days or by November 8.
The jobs driver will be a welcome relief for jobseekers, with latest figures showing unemployment in the region as slightly higher than the rest of NSW, with an jobless rate of 5.2% (ABS, June 2016).
NORTEC marketing manager Michelle Dowding said the campaign was off to a strong start with employers looking to hire workers from all areas, including many looking for mature-age employees.
"There's a big response from employers about hiring employees over 50 because the government did a big campaign and there's up to $10,000 wage subsidies attached,” Ms Dowding said.
Ms Dowding said retail and hospitality jobs were still the biggest employment drivers across all the regions but "in places like Ipswich there's a lot of manufacturing and trade jobs available”.
NORTEC business development officer Donna Bowmer said there was a variety of jobs on the Tweed but people were still more likely to find a job if they did a bit of research beforehand.
"If people want to work locally, they really have to look at the industries this area particular area is strong in,” Ms Bowmer said.
Ms Bowmer said the three main industries in the Tweed currently hiring included hospitality, tourism and business tourism traineeships.
"Tourism is really kicking off again now that it's coming into warmer times, heading out of winter into spring and the September school holidays,” Ms Bowmer said.
She encouraged jobseekers not to be disheartened if they didn't have the right skillset for a job.
