RUGBY league legend Johnathan Thurston has never been known for having a big head.

But his noggin has now been immortalised in the form of a giant five metre high headgear that's been unveiled in Townsville.

Online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au has paid tribute to JT by building the huge structure alongside the Cowboy's home ground ahead of Saturday's round one clash with the Sharks.

Here's the lowdown on the Johnathan Thurston "Giant Headgear"

  • 5m high, 4.5m in diameter
  • Driven up from Sydney warehouse
  • 160m of steel rod
  • Around 600 welds
  • 120 bolts
  • 25/1 scale model
  • 80 square metres of Lycra
  • 200 man hours in production

"Everyone knows the Big Banana, the Big Prawn and the Big Pineapple….now Townsville can lay claim to the Big Headgear," said sportsbet.com.au's Christian Jantzen.
