Josh's set for the big boys

A RECORD 60 nippers will turn out for Byron Bay today when the 2011 Age Surf Life Saving Championships at Kingscliff get under way.

Leading the charge will be Josh Brown, 14, who will be competing in his last nippers event before he heads into senior competition next season.

“I'm really looking forward to it,” he said.

“It should be a good way to finish off my nippers career.

“It's a once-a-year opportunity to compete against the best competitors in the state.”

Josh is coming off a big few months – he took home 11 medals from the NSW Country Championships at South West Rocks in January.

He is most looking forward to the ironman and board events this weekend.

Josh has already had a taste of senior competition this season, stepping up to compete in the under-15 division.

But he said it was the team events that had put him in the best position to perform well at the state championships this weekend.

“I'm lucky we have a really good team at Byron Bay,” Josh said this week.

In a fitting swansong, Josh will lead the all-age board relay on Sunday.

“I couldn't think of a better way to finish up,” he said.
