Joy of Christmas goes up in lights
RESIDENTS are switching on the lights in Tweed suburbs to herald the start of the festive season.
Christmas lights displays are an amazing attraction that gives pleasure for a few weeks of the year.
In Terranora, Helen and Geoff Kirby have the lights twinkling early.
"Each year we ask ourselves why we do this, and we always come back to the same answer - we love Christmas,” Mrs Kirby said.
"It is a lot of hard work and expense but that is all worth it as we do it for our community.
"Hearing the joy it gives to our regulars and newcomers is all worth the effort.
"Many come by car, some by bus and a lot of walkers.
"We give out candy canes to the kids as it gets a little closer to Christmas just to make their experience a little more special.”
The Kirbys have been putting up the light display for about 20 years and have built up an impressive collection.
"Each year we try to buy some new lights or blow-ups just to make some changes,” Mrs Kirby said.
"We can see from last year's display where we need to make changes.
"We do not have a theme, it just happens.
"Hubby Geoff does all the hard work; however, this year I stepped in to help as he was recovering from shoulder surgery. All the effort is well worth the reward in joy from our community.”
