Junior stars set to take on the world

A RISING star of world tennis, Sara Tomic heads a list of up-and-coming Australian talent set to contest the $25,000 (USD) Tweed Coast Tennis International at Arkinstall Park.

A two-time International Tennis Federation (ITF) champion in 2015-16, after claiming back-to-back titles at the Sharm El Sheikh tournament in Turkey and a junior grand slam semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January, Tomic will be a leading hope out of an Australian contingent including Priscilla Hon, Olivia Rogowska and future star Destanee Aiava.

Tomic, the sister of world number 19 men's player Bernard Tomic, is a player on the rise and at 18-years should figure strongly in the ITF Futures Tournament.

Tomic will be joined by tournament favourites and world top 300 players Jennifer Elie (USA) and Katy Dunne (GBR), who will be hard to beat after being seeded in the first two spots after the main draw was released on Wednesday.

Pro One Tennis Academy's Natasha Kersten said the tournament was shaping up well with the final player in the main draw ranked around the 690-mark in the world compared to the 920's in 2015.

"There's a really good mix of players with a good international field,” Kersten said.

"We have the best juniors and up and coming players from Australia playing, so it's definitely a very strong field.”

Kersten said the international field, which makes up nine of the preliminary top 18 spots, was a bit of an unknown for the Australian juniors.

Another player to watch out for is Melbourne teenager Aiava, who, like Tomic, is shaping up as a world-class talent of the future.

"She has played with Steffi Graf, and she is a future star. She's definitely one to look out for,” Kersten said.

Six players are still to be added through four wildcard and two exemption spots.

The tournament runs from September 18-25.
