Junior surfers trained by the best

JUNIOR surfer Luke Glover from Caloundra was over the moon today when he met his surfing hero Joel Parkinson.

The ASP World Tour surfer was at Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) at Casuarina on the final day of a four-day surf camp to share his expertise and give the 16 young hopefuls aged 8-18 years some surfing tips.

"I've learnt heaps from the camp," Joel said.

"I'm really striving to achieve my personal best and the camp has really helped to improve my surfing skills.

"It has also been a lot of fun.

"I'm pretty stoked that I got to meet Parko."

Luke hopes to get his surfboard signed by the pro surfer.

Each participant has received a personalised signed Joel Parkinson poster, Billabong goodies bags and HPC shirt.

HPC instructor Clancy Dawson said the camp has been very productive.

"They are a great group of kids," he said.

A video analysis of each wave the participants surfed during the camp was a feature, with a DVD of themselves surfing to watch at home.

The DVD includes surfing footage with digital pencil drawings identifying where a surfer can improve technique, comparisons with the world's best surfers and audio commentary from their coaches.

Camps cater for surfers of all ability levels whether they are looking to finish their first cutback or start landing aerials.

Groups are split according to ability so surfers are training with surfers at a similar ability.
