Elliot announces relief funding

AN additional $1.28 million has been announced to help 10 local community organisations provide emergency relief services to vulnerable families and individuals.

Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot said the funding would be distributed over the next three years.

She said the ongoing investment for front line organisations would ensure services on the North Coast could continue to help people in need.

"This secure, ongoing funding recognises that demand for emergency relief services remains high across our region," Ms Elliot said.

"It will help support the valuable role of these local services."

Four of these groups are within the Tweed Shire: Brunswick Community Care Council Inc, Murwillumbah Community Centre Inc, Salvation Army Tweed Heads/Murwillumbah Community Welfare Centre, and St Vincent de Paul - Tweed Heads and St Joseph's Youth Service.

The Gillard Government is also providing $2.2 million over three years so people can speak directly to a qualified financial counsellor.

Immediate access to a financial counsellor, including for people who may not be able to readily access a face-to-face service, can be gained by calling 1800 007 007.
