TRIUMPHANT local MP Justine Elliot has called on the National Party to honour its election commitment of $3.3 million to resurface Kennedy Drive.

Mrs Elliot said she was calling upon the National Party Senator Fiona Nash and Tweed National Party MP Geoff Provest to confirm the funding would be delivered to Tweed Shire Council, even though their candidate did not win the seat of Page.

During the election campaign, the Nationals candidate for Richmond, Matthew Fraser, said the Coalition would pay the $3.3million cost of resurfacing of Kennedy Drive, but only if he was elected.

However, Saturday's election saw Mrs Elliot retain the seat of Richmond.

Mrs Elliot points to a letter to the residents of Richmond from Mr Fraser, distributed during the campaign which announced the funding for the road, which did not specify  a proviso about the money only being available should Mr Fraser win.

"In a letter to residents, the National Party's candidate gave the commitment: "That's why I was so pleased to be joined last week by Senator Fiona Nash to announce that a Nationals & Liberal Government will provide more than $3.3 million towards the resurfacing of Kennedy Drive," Mrs Elliot said.

"In a related media release Senator Nash promised: "In making the announcement, Nationals Senator for NSW, Fiona Nash, said the funding would be provided as part of the Coalition's first budget if elected to government."

Mrs Elliot said the Nationals had a track record of breaking their promises on Kennedy Drive.

"I'll keep holding the National Party to account and standing up for locals on the issues that are important to us," said Justine.
