Keep cost saving phone tips under your cap
IF you are getting massive mobile phone bills at the end of the month, take at look at these top tips to save some cash.
Network Communications Tweed Heads are mobile specialists and manager Talor Thomson was adamant that keeping track of data usage was the best way to lower the cost of communicating.
"Setting up an account where you can monitor usage on your phone is a good idea. Talk to a salesperson about tailoring a plan to your needs," he said.
"If your phone has the ability to cap data that would be your best option."
Capping data on many modern phones is as simple as accessing settings or internet options and selecting a usage amount you would like to stop at.
Mr Thomson suggested prepaid plans for those who didn't use their mobile phone often, which could also help cut costs.
"We also have cheap BYO plans for customers that already have a phone," he said.
Mr Thomson said that having a landline may help save some costs, but the convenience of mobiles made them a necessity for many users.
"I recommend that everyone has a mobile phone, it's just safer, especially for the elderly. You can't take your home phone everywhere," he said.
"It's really all about being proactive and watching what data you use."
Coopers Communication Tweed Heads are communications consultants and a spokesman agreed that monitoring usage was the best solution for cheaper mobile use.
"You can also text instead of ringing," he said.
"It's a lot cheaper to do that.
"And get in touch with your provider to see if you're paying the right price.
"It's worth checking."
The spokesman suggested that the most obvious tip, which was often overlooked, was simply keeping below your mobile plan's cap limit.
Penalties for exceeding data or call usage with mainstream providers was often steep and could vary from tens to hundreds of dollars.
A Telstra spokeswoman said that there was many ways to manage mobile spending, including choosing the correct plan and being aware of what you download.
"Get the right plan. It sounds obvious but getting the right plan with the right amount of date included is essential and can save you some pain down the track," she said.
"Think before you download. There are a range of tools to help you monitor how much data you've used throughout the month."
The spokeswoman also suggested using service provider's unmetered download sites, connecting to home wi-fi services and taking advantage of free call and text periods.
