Six ways you can make sure your house doesn't burn down

A REPRESENTATIVE of NSW Fire and Rescue popped in to the office this week with an important message for all of us.

With the recent spate of house fires, vigilance is key for safety, NSW Fire and Rescue's purpose is to enhance community safety, quality of life and confidence by minimising the impact of hazards and emergency incidents on the people, environment and economy of NSW.

One of the main tips is to keep your eye on cooking at all times, with many house fires starting in the kitchen.

More firefighter home fire safety tips:

  1. Keep clothing and other flammable materials at least one metre from your heater
  2. Clean out the clothes dryer filter after every load
  3. Don't overload your powerboards
  4. Never use wheat bags in bed
  5. Ensure you have a working smoke alarm and a practised home escape plan
  6. If a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000)
