KFC plan for Byron Bay shop

KFC has revealed a Northern Rivers family is behind a controversial move to open a franchise in Byron Bay, a town that successfully fought against McDonald's opening in the 1990s.

A company spokesman said the family wanted to "establish a small outlet away from the main shopping area and on a site set back from the street which is already zoned for restaurant use".

This appears consistent with a rumour the shopping precinct behind the Palace Cinemas on Jonson St is the proposed site for the chain outlet.

"Byron Bay has grown rapidly in the last decade and we would certainly like to be part of what is now a vibrant commercial centre that features many major chains and retailers," a spokesman said.

"We are very conscious and respectful of Byron's heritage which is why we have asked to meet with councillors as soon as possible to discuss our plans prior to a formal proposal being lodged.''
