Kidnap attempt prompts NHW comeback
ALICIA Morgan was horrified when a child was almost abducted around the corner from her children's school.
On June 9, a four-year-old boy was approached by an unknown man outside his Tumbulgum home.
The following Wednesday, a similar thing happened to a nine-year-old Murwillumbah girl.
These two frightening incidents have prompted Ms Morgan to re-launch Tumbulgum's Neighbourhood Watch.
"It's not just too close to home, it's right on our doorstep," Ms Morgan said.
While she currently lives in Chinderah, Ms Morgan has always called Tumbulgum home.
"My kids go to the school here," she said.
"I went to school here. I'm the president of the P&C and I work at the pub."
She says while it's great to see local parents discussing stranger danger issues on social media, it's time to get out from behind that screen.
"Let's maybe get out and start meeting our neighbours," she said.
"All it takes is a couple of people to keep an eye out."
Police are supportive of Ms Morgan.
"We rely on the community to help us out because we can't be every-where all the time," Tweed Byron LAC crime manager Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said.
Tumbulgum hasn't had an active Neighbourhood Watch group since the 90s.
The first and only other co-ordinator of the group was Ms Morgan's mother, Joanne King.
"I'm just so happy someone's starting it up again, because they need it," Ms King said.
