Kingscliff surfer dips out at Newcastle

KINGSCLIFF surfer Mitchell James has fallen agonisingly short of a second round berth at the Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro in Newcastle this morning, despite leading for the entire heat.

Surfing in Heat 15 of the WSL 6000 event, James lead with a combined 12.74 after two strong rides, but was pipped in the heat’s dying seconds by South African Dale Staples, who flew home late to take the heat with a combined 13.97.

James, who currently holds a 2016 QS rank of 114, will now head to Manly for the Australian Open of Surfing, which kicks-off on February 29.

Fellow Tweed Surfer Brittany Nichol is scheduled to compete when the Taggart Women’s Pro gets under way at Newcastle later today.
