Kingscliff surfer joins race for wildcard

KINGSCLIFF surfer Mitchell James has rocketed up the Queensland Championship Circuit leaderboard after claiming victory in the MP Classic for the second consecutive year.

James eclipsed his rivals in the final at Duranbah on Saturday to claim back-to-back victories in the prestigious event.

The result has elevated him to fifth in the ratings heading into the fourth and final event of the series.

Sunshine Coaster Dave Reardon-Smith retained the ratings lead despite suffering a shock loss in the early rounds at the weekend.

James trails Reardon-Smith by 460 points but the winner will be decided on the surfers’ best three results, which will benefit James who did not contest the second event in the series.

The winner of the QCC series will earn entry into the trials event for the World Championship Tour event at Snapper Rocks next year.

James dominated Sunday’s four-man final, notching an excellent 8.33-point ride (out of a possible 10) in the early stages to take control.

He backed that up with a 7.63 to finish with a combined total of 15.96. Coolangatta’s Quinn Bruce finished second with former world tour competitors Troy Brooks and Ricardo Christie third and fourth respectively.

The QCC series will conclude with the five-star Burleigh Classic on June 25-26.
