Kingscliff Triathlon is on the grow

KINGSCLIFF Triathlon organisers have grown the event to more than 900 competitors and are hoping for fine weather next weekend.

Event and administration manager Sebastien Krantz said the seventh bi-annual event will feature races for all age groups and skill levels and bring some much-needed tourist dollars to the region.

"It's for everyone, kids and older people. Our oldest competitor last year was 78-years-old and he'll be returning this year," he said.

"About 50-60% of people return from previous events. It's a great course to start out in, or for elite athletes, as it's very flat ground and a nice course."

About 200 competitors were signed up to test their stamina in the new sprint distance event, which involved a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

There are nine different events , which will offer varied entertainment for spectators and a range of challenges for competitors.

Krantz said the Tweed community was keen to support the event, which attracts more athletes every year.

"We're really happy with the support we've received from the community. We try to engage everyone and make it a great tourism event," he said.

"It's also creating a bit of a buzz on Facebook too.

"And we were lucky enough to secure Hyundai as a sponsor."
