Kingy to host longboard comp
THE 2012 Australian Longboard Surfing Open to be held at Kingscliff in March has received $5000 in State Government funding.
Kingscliff has previously hosted the Malfunction Surf Festival, but a decision by the owners of the Malfunction brand to move the festival back to the Gold Coast forced organisers to create a new event.
The event will retain the competitive aspect, and the 6-star ASP LQS men's and women's divisions, a noserider event, plus other amateur divisions and a range of surf culture activities including a car rally, live music, movies and learn-to-surf.
Kingscliff has produced several world champion surfers including multiple women's champion Stephanie Gilmore and the first world champion longboarder, Phyllis O'Donnell.
Sports and recreation minister Graham Annesley said the government was happy to support the five-day international event through the state's International Sporting Events Program.
"The 2012 Australian Longboard Surfing Open will provide a valuable boost for the tourism industry on the Tweed Coast," Mr Annesley said.
"The program helps many NSW sporting organisations attract and stage international events."
The event will be held from March 21- 25.
