THE winner of a $1.9 million beach home and $40,000 in gold bullion remained unaware of his windfall following a RSL Art Union Competition draw held at the prize location at Kirra Beach today.

RSL Lotteries general manager Luke Traini tried to contact the lucky entrant, known only as Russell, to inform him of his win however after a couple of attempts to reach the winner on his landline, Mr Traini decided leave a message and give Russell the opportunity to call back at his leisure.

Russell, from Point Vernan near Harvey Bay, has entered the competition almost religiously over the last seven years and bought at least $10 worth of tickets for every single draw.

Mr Traini said this time Russell had bought a booklet of tickets worth $10 and then decided to invest a little more by buying another $10 booklet.

"It was the second lot of tickets which brought him the win," Mr Traini said.

Because Russell proved impossible to reach immediately and to illustrate the reaction of winners, Mr Traini described the response of the previous first prize winner.

When called on her mobile, the winner initially failed to answer and texted "who is this" to Mr Traini.

Mr Traini identified himself and within seconds the winner called back to find out what the call was all about.

The unnamed 24-year-old from Western Australia went absolutely berserk when she finally received the news, started to breathe heavily and uttered the words "oh my god" over and over again.

The winner of the next draw will in all likelihood react in a similarly incredulous manner especially considering the size of the prize.

The next competition offers the opportunity to win three units, one in Brisbane, one on the Gold Coast and one in Sydney, to a total value of about $1.6 million.

In the past some winners have had to sell their prizes within months of taking possession due to large rate bills, however the RSL lottery ensures winners will have time to enjoy their prizes by paying the rates and any further costs for the first year.

The lottery also handed out a $10,000 gold bullion prize which was won by a person named Gregory from Western Australia and awarded a $5,000 gold bullion win to an unidentified entrant.

The RSL Art Union competition started in Queensland in 1956 and in that time has helped an undisclosed number of veterans and their families with issues such as emergency accommodation, home repairs, grants, advocacy services, assistance following wounding and assistance in the payment of funerals.

The lottery also supports current defence personnel who receive comfort parcels when serving overseas.

Tickets for the next draw are available at rslartunion.com.au or by calling 1300 775 888.
