Club needs help after armed robbery

A CLUB that was the target of an armed robbery needs the community’s help to keep its doors open.

Kirra Sports Club was holding a ‘Call to Arms’ fundraising weekend to help it recover after an armed robber escaped with $26,477.

A gunman confronted a staff member at the front doors of the Kirra Sports Club at around 6am on Monday June 6.

The gunman forced the staff member to open the club’s safe.

He bound the staff member then escaped on foot with the weekend takings.

Club manager Grant McKenzie said only $10,000 was covered by insurance.

“As you can imagine this is a devastating blow to the club,” Mr McKenzie said.

“The club was already struggling due to the economy,” he said.

“We had a lot of donations coming in so we thought we would do a fundraiser weekend for people to come in and support the club.”

The Call to Arms Fundraiser started on Friday, 24th June through to Sunday, 26th June at the club.
