Klein carves into Ocean and Earth
KINGSCLIFF surf princess, Codie Klein, continued to emulate the successes of hometown hero Stephanie Gilmore with another impressive showing at the Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage at North Cronulla at the weekend.
Klein was in excellent form on day-one, posting the highest wave score of the day with a massive 9.87, and sustained her momentum all the way through to an epic grand final showdown on Sunday.
Unfortunately for Klein though, it was the unstoppable Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW), who took out the under-16 girls’ division, with Klein, Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie, NSW) and April Charles (Cronulla, NSW) finishing second to fourth respectively.
Coffey also edged out Klein for the $500 Wave of the Weekend Award following her perfect 10-point ride during the semi-finals.
Holly-Sue Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) added another trophy to the Coffey family trophy cabinet, winning a tight under-13 girls’ final from a fast finishing Laura Poncini (Moffat Beach, QLD), with Cali McDonagh (North Curl Curl, NSW) in third and Renee Heazlewood (Moffat Beach, Qld) fourth.
In the under-16s boys, it was Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW) who snuck home on his home break against fellow Cronulla surfer Rory Jenkins by just over one point, with Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW) and Matty King (Ulladulla, NSW) rounding out the placings.
Meanwhile Merewether’s Jackson Baker took top honours in the under-13 boys over Warilla’s Josh Szele, Jackson Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) and Jack Germain (Lake Cathie, NSW), with an all-or-nothing final wave score of 8.67.
