Kman teaches skaters new skills
WITH the completion of the South Tweed skatepark local skateboarders can show off their 'ollies and 'kickflips' at three purpose-built bowls.
Murwillumbah, Cabarita and Tweed Heads all boast skate venues while just across the border skateparks in Coolangatta, Currumbin and Tugun are within driving or skating distance from the Tweed.
To learn how to use these facilities safely and to perfect some of the sport's more difficult moves, Pottsville's Karim 'Kman' Moulay offers skateboarding lessons for young and old.
Kman recently moved to the Tweed to escape big city life and take up an offer from the local PCYC to act as youth activities coordinator.
Kman and his wife Arielle previously ran a skateboarding school in Bondi in Sydney where Kman also taught people how to surf.
"I'm a mad lover of surfing and skating and will keep going until I physically can't any longer," Kman said.
Because skateboarding can be likened to surfing on concrete, teaching the sport was a natural progression for the former surf instructor.
Kman said he loved inspiring kids to not give up on difficult tricks while helping them achieve their sporting goals.
"I'm studying to become a primary school teacher and with my work at the PCYC and the skateboarding classes, I'm constantly involved with kids.
"I love being surrounded by kids and although skating is just a bonus, I'd like to keep doing it until I can't anymore." He said.
Kman's skills have brought him some welcome publicity with appearances on The Kerrie-Anne Morning Show where he taught Kerrie-Anne a few tricks, and on Totally Wild, MyBusinessTV, Go Go Stop, Hi-5, and Saturday Disney.
The classes are held at different locations depending on the ability of the student(s) and are conducted on request.
Lessons are $25 per person (minimum group of three) and $50 per private lesson, which includes all equipment.
