Tippett allowed to enter next month's pre-season draft

WHILE the AFL is leaving the door wide open for Kurt Tippett to join his club of choice, 2012 premier Sydney, the GWS Giants have by no means ruled out nabbing the controversial forward.

Despite facing the AFL Commission tomorrow to answer charges relating to the controversial contract he signed with Adelaide in 2009, Tippett has been allowed to enter next month's pre-season draft and to put a significant price on his head.

As expected, Tippett yesterday nominated for the draft, which will be held on December 11, after removing himself from the Crows' playing list.

While it has been alleged the 25-year-old forward accepted payments totalling as much as $200,000 outside the Crows' salary cap, he will be able to ask for close to a $1million a season.

It is believed the Swans have offered Tippett a four-year contract worth at least $3.5million, and the Giants would have to match that offer in order to select him.

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy said yesterday: "We're going to be very keen to get him obviously.

"We want to get a player like that, we need a ruck-forward ...

"(And) we've got plenty of money, it's whether we want to spend it.

"Either way if we don't get him, then I hope Sydney do."

The Swans have made clear their intentions to pick up Tippett, despite him facing deregistration by the AFL if found guilty of the salary cap breach as well as "engaging in conduct prejudicial to the draft".

As well as the 'under-the-table' payments, it is believed Adelaide agreed to trade Tippett to his club of choice for a second-round national draft pick when his contract expired at the end of the 2012 season.

While deregistration remains a possibility it is expected Tippett will receive a match ban - possibly up to 12 weeks - by the commission.

The Crows, who gave up their first two selections in last week's national draft as a gesture of goodwill, face losing more picks in future drafts, as well as a significant fine.
