Labor promises $40m in Queensland tourism spending

TOURISM will receive $40 million in extra funding and a "senior cabinet member" will oversee the industry under a Labor Government.

Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk announced if elected the party would spend an extra $40 million over four years.

She said despite being one of the LNP government's "four economic pillars" tourism had struggled over the past three years.

"This lack of vision has seen Queensland's market share of overnight visitors fall by 1.1% in the past year, Queensland's market share of international visitors fall be a similar amount and domestic overnight visitor expenditure fall by 2%," she said.

"Key tourism areas in Queensland such as the Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Townsville have seen holiday visitor numbers drop by up to 21% under the Newman Government in the past year."

Ms Palaszczuk said Labor would increase Tourism and Events Queensland's budget to "major new drawcards" and "attract events to regional Queensland", guarantee funding for four years to move it out of the election cycle, focus on China and other emerging tourist markets, and appoint a senior cabinet member as tourism minister.

While the LNP is yet to comment on their tourism policy so far in the election campaign, they have declared it a vital part of the economy as one of the "four pillars" along with mining, agriculture and construction.
