Land ahoy for sailing club
TWEED Valley Sailing Club has received initial support from the council for a storage shed near the Old Fingal Boat Harbour.
Recreation Services manager Stewart Brawley has requested the club first demonstrate community support before further progress is made on the proposal.
Club commodore Hugh Milliken said the club was committed to linking with the wider community to provide sustainable and positive river-based activities for people of all ages and abilities.
"There are many people around the Tweed who have an interest in the sport but just don't have anywhere to store a dinghy."
Mr Milliken said the security fenced 30x30m site located on the beach-side of Fingal Rd would be ideal as a place for the growing club's members to store and work on boats.
"We are quite sure having this facility will increase interest in the club," he said.
"The club currently has 60 paid-up members, with over 150 on the mailing list, all meeting regularly for sailing events.
"We also have a thriving juniors intro-to-sailing based in Jack Evans Boat Harbour that the club is very proud of, as the involvement of children is a key part of our future success as a club."
Mr Brawley said the piece of land was one of several suggested by the sailing club.
"A number of options were identified but the majority of suitable sites were located on crown land and Crown Lands has advised that they would not support the use of crown land for this facility."
Fingal Head Community Association president Dawn Walker could not provide input before deadline.
