Large crowds attend popular festival

MACKAY residents were treated to the sounds of smooth jazz at the weekend at Souths Leagues Club bistro.

The North Queensland Wine and Jazz Festival mixed wine with the musical talents of over five bands who performed on Saturday night and Sunday.

Over 300 jazz fans attended, while sipping on wine and listening to a band like Top Shelf.

The bands came from Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns to play for the eager audience, who were rocking along to new and old songs like Walk on the Wild Side.

Mainstream, swing, Latin and traditional sounds could be heard at the club all weekend.

Sunday, performances started at 8.30am and finished about 1pm.

On Saturday, Mackay Big Band began at 1pm, while the last performers, Jump Jive and Wail concluded the festival at 11pm.

Staff dressed for the event in red, white and black.

They donned sequinned headbands, feathers and hats to match the theme of both the evening and day shows.

Souths Club commercial manager Katherine Hull said the music brought the fans together.

"This is our annual event," Ms Hull said.

"We're very excited that all the bands have come up to play here.

"Bands made use of great instruments like saxophones, drums and guitars throughout their performances."

She said the festival was a popular event for Mackay.

"We had a sold-out show on Saturday night," Ms Hull said.

An acoustic electric guitar pack worth $600 was donated by Mackay Music and displayed at the front of the bistro along with a piano, clarinet and saxophone.

The pack was to be auctioned off later in the day.

Raffle tickets were also sold at the event.

Prizes included a $2000 holiday voucher, a BBQ Bowls Pack for 20, an evening with Doug (cabaret show) and a Harvey World Travel voucher.
