A QANTAS passenger jet was grounded in Mackay on Saturday night after a laser light was pointed at the plane.

A spokesman from Mackay police said one of the two pilots on board was taken to Mackay Base Hospital complaining of sore eyes.

The Qantas link flight landed in Mackay at 6.55pm on Saturday.

The flight, which departed from Brisbane and was heading to Cairns, was then cancelled after the pilot was deemed unfit to fly.

It is understood the laser light was pointed at the aircraft upon its approach to Mackay.
