Last-gasp goal saves day

A STUNNING strike from Mariners skipper John Hutchinson - the last kick of the game - saw his team somehow come away with a 2-all draw against Melbourne City at AAMI Park.

The host looked in control for much of the contest, and seemed almost certain to bring up its first home win this season. City led 2-0 in the 80th minute, before a brilliant dipping Glen Trifiro free-kick put the visitors back into the contest.

And it was only courtesy of a brave decision from referee Adam Fielding, who ordered a re-take after City's Jacob Melling encroached early on the first attempt.

The Mariners kept coming and were rewarded when foundation player Hutchinson blasted home on the final play of the game, during injury time. The hosts scored the first goal in the 11th minute, with a bullet diving header from Mate Dugandzic who met a pinpoint left-foot cross from Iain Ramsay.

Then towering former Brisbane Roar midfielder Erik Paartalu headed home from close range from a Damien Duff corner in the 54th minute.
