Bus service threatened

A NIGHT bus route from Coolangatta to Kingscliff is under threat despite support from Gold Coast City Council.

The N978 Coolangatta-Kingscliff NightLink service was a 12-month trial that offered late-night revilers a safe way to get home.

Councillor Chris Robbins said the NightLink service was under threat because of low passenger numbers.

While the Gold Coast’s council continued funding the NightLink trial in its 2011/12 budget, the Tweed Shire Council stopped supporting the TaxiLink service that met the bus in Kingscliff.

The Tweed council stopped the taxi service in March.

The Translink service ran every hour from 12.15am to 3.15am on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

A Gold Coast City Council spokesman said the NightLink services provided a safe, convenient and reliable transport alternative.

“Its operation also mirrors other similar, and highly successful, NightLink services in Brisbane,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the council had $227 million for transport initiative in its budget next year for areas that would be under funded otherwise, such as the southern Gold Coast.

Tweed council spokesman said council was investigating other transport options for late-night revilers from the Gold Coast.

“We had spent a lot of money in promoting the TaxiLink service,” the spokesman said. The 12-month trial of NightLink started in November 2010.
