Late surge not enough for Tigers
AUSSIE RULES: Tweed Coast has fallen narrowly short of defeating rivals Ballina in a heart-stopping Northern Rivers AFL contest last weekend.
The Tigers made a final quarter surge to almost pull off an improbable win, falling to the Bombers by three points.
In the latest frantic finish, which has become a habit between the clubs, the Bombers held off a Tiger surge to win 9.10.64 to 8.13.61, in their round five clash at Seabreeze Oval. It is the third consecutive match between the pair that has been decided by a goal or less.
"We just need to be better for longer,” Tigers player-coach Jonathon Bevan said.
"In the tight games there are so many little things that if one or two go your way the result is different and Ballina had a more even spread of contributors than us.”
The Tigers had a late chance to grab the win in that match but were denied when a long- range shot hit the goal post.
"The tight finishes are a result of two very evenly matched teams who play a similar style,” Bevan said.
"I'm encouraged by the willingness of our back six in particular to keep competing under a lot of pressure.”
The loss leaves the Tigers in third position on the ladder behind the unbeaten Byron and Ballina in second.
