THE Southern Cross School K-12 school community now has the opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal culture and history.

The school last week opened its Aboriginal Learning Centre, which will be open to all students - including distance education students.

The school's Aboriginal education co-ordinator, Tamara Smith, said the centre had only been 10 weeks in the making, but $6000 was fundraised to set it up.

"It's a positive educational space," she said.

The centre has resources like DVDs, books, artworks, artefacts and newspapers available for students - and the school is looking for more items to be donated to the centre.

It is run by a committee, which, Ms Smith said, will mean it will last into the future.

She said Elders will be able to come to the centre to talk to students, and it is hoped the centre also will be used by the broader community.

Ms Smith said the motivation for the centre came from the fact that the school is sited on Bundjalung land, and the school has "a long, proud history of working with the community".
