Legally Blonde wins big at the Helpmann Awards

IT ALL came up pink at this year's Helpmann Awards, with Legally Blonde the Musical taking home the top gong for Best Musical.

Star Lucy Durack took home the award for Best Female Actor in Musical, while the legal comedy also took home awards for Best Direction, Best Choreography and Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Eddie Perfect and Christie Whelan Browne hosted the glittering ceremony, recognising the best in live performance, at the Sydney Opera House tonight.

Australia's pop princess Kylie Minogue was recognised as a co-recepient of the JC Williamson Award alongside arts philanthropist David Blenkinsop.

A special award was also created to recognise the ground-breaking show King Kong. The Outstanding Theatrical Achievement Award was presented for the design, creation and operation of the giant gorilla at the heart of the show.

King Kong took home four other awards, while Opera Australia's Salome won four awards including Best Opera.

Queensland acting great Geoffrey Rush was named Best Male Actor in a Musical for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
