Sherrington steps out in main event
NORMALLY at the fights, half the seats are vacant during the preliminary bouts as boxing fans either time their arrival to coincide with the main event or, as the bulk of them do, have a few drinks and a chat outside the auditorium.
That certainly will not be the case at Gold Coast International Hotel on Saturday night when local promoter Jamie Myer puts on another action-packed card on which World Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Les Sherrington steps out in the main event.
Sherrington does battle with hard-punching Pakistani Kashif “The Stiff” Mumtaz on the Black Tie evening program which is a fundraiser for the Gold Coast Community Fund.
The headline act will be a battle royale as the pair fought just under three years ago when “Lock ‘n’ Load” Sherrington won on points after 12 torrid rounds.
The “house full” sign will go up early in the evening because the undercard is a beauty.
Myer has a wonderful knack of putting on not only an entertaining boxing program, but also ensuring there is plenty of interest by programming very interesting undercards.
He’s outdone himself this time because pulling on the gloves for charity are former English Test cricket and one-day captain Adam Holliaoke, stunning model Hannah Lindgren, Sarah Godfrey, a local beauty who appeared on the TV program Farmer Wants a Wife, former USA Gladiator and adult film star Belinda Gavin, and triple Coolangatta Gold winner and Australian Gladiator Hayley Bateup.
Hollioake, who played four Tests and captained his country in 14 of his 35 one-dayers, will trade punches with South Coast Automotive Group director Matt Hanrahan.
All the celebrities will don the leather for three two-minute rounds – Bateup will be bashing away at Gavin and Godrey and Lindgren will go toe to toe in the other female stoush.
All four of the deadly damsels have been undergoing intensive training in the boxing basics; stepping into the ring without falling over the rope, holding their hands up and being able to throw a straight left and a right cross.
There are three other bouts on the big card which gets underway at 6.30pm – be there or be square (like a boxing ring).
