Let carers know you care

NATIONAL Party MP for Lismore Thomas George is encouraging local residents to support those who support others during Carers Week which began on Sunday.

“We have all got relatives, friends or neighbours who are carers, and this special week is an opportunity to tell them we care about them too,” Mr George said.

“Carers are defined as family members or friends who provide unpaid care for people with a disability, mental health problem, chronic condition or who are frail aged.

“They are not seeking financial rewards, but very much appreciate recognition for the enormous contribution they make.”

“Anyone, anytime across Australia” is the theme for Carers Week 2009, reflecting the unexpected and indiscriminate nature of the caring role and focusing on the geographical diversity of carers.

Yesterday the Labor MP for the Federal seat of Richmond and Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot marked the start of Carers Week by launching the Face of Care photographic exhibition at Old Parliament House in Canberra.

The week was officially also launched by Her Excellency, Quentin Bryce.

Mrs Elliot said almost 2.6 million Australians provide care for family members or friends with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or the frail aged.
