Let's do the time warp again

TWEED residents are going to have to suck up daylight saving because it's not going away any time soon, and the Premier of Queensland Campbell Newman is being blamed.

Just before the State election in March 2011, Nationals leader Andrew Stoner and Tweed MP Geoff Provest gained national attention by promising to fix daylight saving anomalies between NSW and Queensland The Cross Border Commission was given the task of tackling the problem.

But NSW Labor has released correspondence obtained under Freedom of Information which reveals the problem can't be fixed because Mr Newman has refused to change Queensland's clocks to NSW time, leaving border residents in a time warp hell.

In official correspondence Mr Newman wrote: "While I note the points raised in the report, I do not consider these issues to be Queensland Government priorities."

Day light saving was one of Tweed Nationals MP Geoff Provest's election promises, and the subject of the Cross Border Commission, which cost $700,000.

Tweed Labor candidate Ron Goodman challenged Mr Provest to explain what he was going to do to honour his election promise. "It is almost a year overdue now and this is yet another broken promise by the National Party," he said.

"The Cross Border Commission has been a complete failure - and they have failed to convince Queensland and the other states on daylight saving."

Tweed Heads business owners Emma Coombs and Craig Jordan said daylight saving had forced them to extend their operating hours at Border Diesel Injection Service and wreaked havoc on their family life.

"We've got to stay behind an hour because if customers want to pick up their cars when they knock off, at five Queensland, it's six for us. Same for drop off.

"If we ask for first thing in the morning, seven am for them is eight am for us. It makes for a bloody hard long day's work."

Mrs Coombs said she would like to see NSW adopt to Qld times to solve the problem of daylight savings, Qld won't come to the party. "It doesn't worry us if its sunny at tea time, I'd be happy," she said.

Mr Provest could not be contacted for comment, but Mr Stoner told the media it was "ridiculous to suggest anyone from NSW could force the Queensland government to do anything."

"In Opposition, the Nationals leader Andrew Stoner and Tweed MP Geoff Provest said they were going to fix daylight saving and other cross-border issues, but in government they have gone silent and want their promise to be forgotten by north coast communities," Mr Goodman said.

"It also shows that the Cross Border Commissioner Steve Toms is absolutely toothless and his work is being totally ignored."
