Liberal Senator admits it was unwise to seek out Thomson

LIBERAL frontbencher Senator Mathias Cormann has conceded he made a mistake when he asked embattled and suspended Labor MP Craig Thomson to support the Coalition.

The shadow assistant treasurer wrote to Thomson on Tuesday saying changes to superannuation legislation was worthy of his support.

It follows a campaign by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott who has proclaimed Thomson's vote is "tainted" by an ongoing Health Services Union scandal and that the Coalition would never accept his support.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard accused the opposition of showing double standards by refusing his support publicly and privately trying to solicit it.

Senator Cormann told ABC Radio on Thursday he should never have written to Thomson.

Mr Thomson's name would be taken off a database of crossbench MPs used by his office, he said.

"To be very, very clear ... there is no way that the Coalition would be accepting Craig Thomson's vote."
