A SYDNEY pair experienced the shock of their lives after a lightning bolt struck nearby as they were standing on the water's edge.

Stelios Longinidis and his girlfriend were headed for a swim as a ferocious storm rumbled overhead.

Longinidis told NewsCorp they thought a rain-swept swim would be romantic.

As she zips towards the water, Longindis yells out that it could be dangerous.

A moment later, the heavens open and the lightning strikes.

"Holy mother of god, Jesus Christ," Longinidis is heard yelling as he runs.

"Oh my god babe the lightning bolt just missed you."

The YouTube video has now been viewed almost 600,000 times.
