Lions skipper escapes serious injury

DAYNE Beams will miss up to a month of footy after scans revealed he strained his AC joint in a heavy bump by Giant Shane Mumford.

Brisbane considered the news that their skipper did not require surgery and would play again this year as a positive.

They predict he will miss 3-4 weeks.

Rhys Mathieson spent more time in the midfield during Saturday's 10 goal loss to GWS, after Beams went down in the opening minutes, and produced the best game of his career.

However, the loss of their best player will hurt them with tough outings against Essendon, Geelong, Richmond and a rejuvenated Carlton over the next four rounds.

The Lions have already lost Allen Christensen and Mitch Robinson to season ending injuries.

Former Queensland Under-18s captain Ben Keays looms as a potential replacement. Keays was best on ground in the NEAFL at the weekend.

Former Blue Tom Bell would have been another contender but he suffered multiple leg fractures in the same NEAFL outing and his season is over.
