Local cast brings a children’s favourite alive

THE story of the legendary children’s favourite Mary Poppins comes to life this week at the Gold Coast Arts Centre.

The local production, beginning last night and screening nightly until June 25 adds to the list of Mary Poppins stage productions which have played in 19 countries and in 14 different languages, winning awards around the world.

The story of Mary Poppins is being performed by a host of local talent, who were selected from 140 auditions for the various lead and supporting cast roles.

Arts Centre programming director Brad Rush said the stakes were high for principle roles in the show.

“Following an extensive audition process, we are proud to bring a superb cast of mostly local talent to the production,” he said.

Mary Poppins will be played by Georgina Hopson, whose recent credits include playing Cinderella in the Harvest Rain production of Into the Woods.

Poppins’ best friend and jack-of-all-trades Bert, made famous by Dick Van Dyke, will be played by local Max Patterson, who said he was looking forward to playing the role after returning from abroad.

“My sister and I wore out the film on VHS as kids, so my inner nine-year-old is particularly thrilled,” he said.

“I think the opportunity and experience that the Arts Centre provides to local, aspiring performers is invaluable.”

Mr Rush said the week long state production had created a buzz, and with a stellar cast, could prove to be a favourite at the arts centre.

“Early indications confirmed that this will be a real crowd pleaser,” he said.
