Chinderah pub a lifesaver for flood affected residents

CHINDERAH Tavern was filled with beer and community spirit this week as locals washed down their troubles with an ice cold schooner.

Floodwaters were lapping at the pub as surprisingly cheerful locals hung off the balcony with beers in hand.

Out the front of the tavern kids were splashing about and having a great time in the water with body boards and homemade water skis.

Inside around 35 parents and flood affected residents chatted about their issues over a beer as they waited for the floodwater to recede so clean up could begin.

Tweed Head's Nicole Hartman had dropped into the pub to show the floods to her sister Sam, who was visiting for Australia Day.

"I have a (Nissan) X-trail so could drive through, but all small cars were parked back on the highway and people walked down."

Miss Hartman said it was excellent to see the community spirit in times like these.

"In a place like that (Chinderah) everyone helps out in these situations," she said.

"Nothing else to do at this point in time until clean up, and having a drink and being in good company keeps people's spirits high."

Miss Hartman said that it was great to see people banding together through the tough times.

"Everyone is going through the same thing so can relate to people's emotions," she said.

"Considering the crisis everyone was smiling and laughing."

Miss Hartman wished Tweed the best of luck during the coming days.

"I hope everyone is safe and well and that the people badly affected by the flood water can recover from this," she said.
